What is the Workforce Information System?
The St. Louis Workforce Information System (WIS) provides timely workforce information to help education and employment and training entities better prepare local residents for participation in today's rapidly changing workplace. This information includes:

    • Current estimates of occupation demand
    • Projections of occupation demand
    • Current occupation skills and job requirements
    • Wage, salary and benefit information Information is assembled through an extensive survey of local businesses throughout the two state, twelve county region

     

This information is used by:

    • Training and employment entities
    • Colleges and universities
    • K-12 school districts
    • State one-stop career centers
    • Vocational education centers
    • Economic development agencies
    • Workforce development departments
    • Human Resource departments
    • Community organizations

Why is the Workforce Information System Important? Top...
A growing problem for local businesses is finding qualified workers. At the same time, universities, colleges and training and employment agencies face challenges preparing workers with the necessary skills. This is because of:

The St. Louis Workforce Information System (WIS) provides the St. Louis Metropolitan Region with timely workforce information. This comprehensive database includes current estimates and projections on occupation demand and a current picture of the changing skills and job requirements of those occupations. This information is assembled through an extensive survey of local businesses throughout the two state, twelve county region. Complementing this information is data on regional and county economies, demographics, labor force composition and profiles of the education, training and employment communities. Better qualified workers for local industry is the goal of the WIS.

The St. Louis Workforce Information System Partners  Top...
The WIS was developed and is maintained by the Metropolitan Information and Data Analysis Services (MIDAS) unit of the Public Policy Research Center of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. MIDAS is staffed by a director and four full-time employees including a database administrator, an economist and two research analysts. The WIS is supported by funding from UM-St. Louis, University of Missouri Extension and Outreach, the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County Workforce Investment Boards and with information and data support from the Madison and Bond County Workforce Investment Board and the United Way of Greater St. Louis.
