Why your participation in the WIS Business On-Line Survey matters

A growing problem for local businesses is finding qualified workers. At the same time, universities, colleges, and training and employment agencies face challenges preparing workers with the necessary skills. This is due in part because of:

· Rapid changes in the structure of the economy
· Broad applications of new technology
· Increased demands for new occupations
· New and different skill sets and requirements
· Mismatched education and training
· Demographic changes in the workforce

A key part of the solution to these and other challenges is found in more timely and on-going information on occupation demands. This survey is actively providing these types of information including current estimates of occupation demand, current occupation skills and job requirements, wage, salary, benefits, and incentives information.

This survey is a part of a significant project called the Workforce Information System (WIS). This system provides the St. Louis Metropolitan Region with timely workforce information. This comprehensive database includes current estimates and projections on occupation demand and a current picture of the changing skills and job requirements of those occupations. This information is assembled through this extensive survey of local businesses throughout the two-state, twelve county metropolitan region. Complementing this information is data on regional and county economies, demographics, labor force composition and profiles of the education, training and employment communities. A better-qualified worker for local industry is the goal of the WIS.
