Property Tax Issues At the Capital: The Missouri
General Assembly is currently hearing a number of proposals that
will greatly affect Missouri’s property tax system. Two areas
receiving the greatest attention include efforts to strengthen the
law protecting taxpayers from tax increases when assessments rise
more than CPI. The second area is expanding the state’s existing
circuit breaker program of property tax relief for senior citizens
and the disabled. Senate Bill 711, one of the key vehicles for property
tax reform, addresses these issues among others and recently passed
unanimously in the Senate and is undergoing consideration by the
House. Many more proposals are in various stages of consideration.
