Public Finance Initiative: Missouri Motor Vehicle License Tax

Motor vehicle license fees are based on a passenger vehicle’s taxable horse power, ranging from $18.25 to $51.25 for a one year registration. Truck registrations are based on gross weight plus load capacity ranging from $15.75 to $38.25 for one year. Revenue reported as motor vehicle license fees does not include sales taxes nor the personal property tax imposed on automobiles in Missouri (that revenue is included in property tax revenue totals). Fiscal year 2005 Missouri motor vehicle license collections make up 1.59% of the state’s total tax collections and the burden (percent of personal income paid in taxes) on Missouri taxpayers ranks 37th of 50 states.
