Public Finance Initiative: Missouri Motor Fuel Tax

Missouri imposes a motor fuel tax rate of 17¢ per gallon. In addition, the state collects two fees: an agricultural inspection fee of 2.5¢ per 50 gallons and a transport load fee of $40 per 8,000 gallons, making the effective motor fuel tax rate: 17.55¢ per gallon. Fiscal year 2005 Missouri motor fuel tax collections make up 4.3% of the state’s total tax collections and the burden (percent of personal income paid in taxes) on Missouri taxpayers ranks 26th of 50 states.
