Public Finance Initiative: Missouri Individual Income Tax

Missouri’s income tax rate is graduated, ranging from 1.5% to 6% of individual taxable income broken down into 10 brackets. St. Louis City and Kansas City also impose a local earnings tax of 1.0%. Fiscal year 2005 Missouri individual income tax collections make up 25% of the state’s total tax collections and the burden (percent of personal income paid in taxes) on Missouri taxpayers ranks 28th of 43 states (seven states do not impose an individual income tax).
