Public Finance Initiative: Missouri Alcohol Tax

Missouri imposes a tax of $1.86 per barrel of beer or malt liquor, $2.00 per gallon of liquor, and 36¢ per gallon of wine. In addition, a fee of $6 is charged per ton of grapes or per 160 gallons of grape juice produced in the state. Fiscal year 2005 Missouri alcohol tax collections make up 0.16% of the state’s total tax collections and the burden (percent of personal income paid in taxes) on Missouri taxpayers ranks 40th of the 50 states.
