The Public Finance Initiative's Steve Gardner presented data at House Blue Ribbon Property Tax Meeting

At a meeting in Gladstone on October 24, PPRC's Steve Gardner compared Missouri's property tax burden with other states finding that while Missouri's burden is still relatively low, it has been rising. Gardner also provided evidence showing that statewide assessment changes are not beyond market changes. However, those statewide changes result from too many "catch-up" increases in some counties while other counties fail to keep pace with market changes. A PPRC Policy Brief explained that neither assessors nor the State Tax Commission have the needed sales information to properly perform and supervise assessments except in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County and Jackson County.
